Question Variations

  1. "What are static and overflow call session parameters, and how are they defined in GA4?

Applies To

  • Google Analytics 4

Answer

When checkbox to Include events from "static" and "overflow" numbers, only check the box if you want to report events from calls that did not capture a Google Analytics Client ID, which is the anonymous visitor ID Google sets for a webpage visit. This will not tie to any session or visitor information, so if you prefer to keep your web analytics strictly devoted to web (or app) visit tracking, then leave this box unchecked. Within GA4 calls will generally get defined with "not set" parameters which could skew reporting

Additional Information

Customers often pass the marketing source, medium, campaign, or promo number description as custom dimensions, so those static/overflow events can have some associated data. If you use custom dimensions, those are always reported separately from the native session traffic sources in GA4.
