Objective

Pass attribution data to Traffic Acquisition report in GA4

Applies To

-Google Analytics 4

Procedure

To capture the session ID based on the provided instructions and continue with adding the Marketing Data field to the custom parameters in the GA4 integration Action in Invoca, please follow these detailed steps:

  1. Create a Marketing Data Field in Invoca:
  • Log in to your Invoca account using your credentials.
    • Navigate to the settings or configuration section related to Marketing Data fields in Invoca.
    • Look for an option to create a new Marketing Data field and click on it.
  • Provide the following details for the Marketing Data field:
    • Name: ga_session_id
      • Attribution Model: Set to "last" or the equivalent option to capture the most recent session.
    • Type: Short Text or an appropriate field type available in Invoca.
  1. Obtain the GA4 Cookie Name:
  • If you know how to inspect first-party cookies on your website, follow these steps:
    • Open your website in a web browser.
      • Look for a cookie that follows the format "ga##########" (e.g., _ga_QB9EP63Y6E). This is the cookie name you need to capture.
    • Access the browser's developer tools by right-clicking on the page and selecting "Inspect" or by pressing F12.
    • Navigate to the "Application" or "Storage" tab in the developer tools.
    • Expand the "Cookies" section and locate the first-party cookies.
  • If you are unfamiliar with inspecting cookies, follow these steps to find the cookie name in Google Analytics 4 (GA4):
    • Login to your Google Analytics 4 account.
      • From the Measurement ID, remove the prefix "G-" to obtain the alphanumeric identifier. This is the cookie name you need to capture.
    • Click on "Admin settings" in the lower-left corner of the page.
    • In the "Property" column, select "Data Streams."
    • Find the desired data stream from the list and click into its overview page.
    • In the upper-right corner, you will find the "Measurement ID." Copy the entire ID.
  1. Update the Tag in Invoca:
  • Locate the section or configuration related to tags in Invoca.
    • Find the tag that needs to capture the new Marketing Data field.
  • Edit the tag settings to make the necessary updates:
    • Set the source as "cookie."
      • Save the changes to the tag.
    • In the data layer name or equivalent field, enter the cookie name you found in step 2 (e.g., _ga_QB9EP63Y6E).
  1. Add Marketing Data Field to Custom Parameters:
  • In Invoca, access the GA4 integration Action settings. This may involve navigating to the specific integration or configuration section.
    • Look for an option to add custom parameters and click on it.
  • Add a new custom parameter using the following details:
    • Parameter Name: ga_session_id
      • Parameter Value: The variable or placeholder that references the Marketing Data field you created in step 1 e.g., ga_session_id
      • Save the changes to the custom parameters.

Additional Information

Google doesn't stitch the event with session data like they once did with Universal Analytics.

One caveat event must be marked as conversion and it must be sent within 72 hours of the session
